About Fred

Kiwi eye surgeon Fred Hollows was born in Dunedin and raised in Palmerston North.

Fred once said, “I studied medicine so I could help others – set a leg or whatever – and it’s given me a great deal of satisfaction”. But setting legs was not what Fred ended up doing.

The eye doctor

Fred tackled eye health in Indigenous Australia, and then dedicated himself to making eye care affordable for people in developing countries.

Fred and Gabi married in 1980 and had five children – Cam, Emma, Anna-Louise and twins Rosa and Ruth

Fred and his wife Gabi set up The Fred Hollows Foundation in 1992 while sitting around their dining room table with a group of friends and supporters.

The Foundation

Fred was many things to many people – a husband, a father, a friend, a skilled ophthalmologist. And for a few politicians and bureaucrats, an irritating thorn in their side.
