About Fred

New Zealander Fred Hollows was a passionate ophthalmologist who became known for his work in restoring eyesight for countless thousands of people in developing countries around the world. It has been estimated that more than one million people in the world can see today because of initiatives instigated by Fred.

Fred Hollows is considered a Kiwi hero by many and was named one of New Zealand's Top 100 History Makers. 

Today, The Fred Hollows Foundation's mission draws on the values and beliefs inspired by the work and example of the late Professor Fred Hollows (1929-1993).

Fred in Bourke

Fred had a very special relationship with Bourke, a country town in northern NSW in Australia. He spent a lot of time there and made many good and lifelong friends as a result. In accordance with his own wishes, Fred was laid to rest in Bourke, where the red dirt and mulgas signal the start of the outback, which he loved so much. Read about this special place.
