Tackling Blindness in the Pacific Region

Isireli sees for the first time in five years

Thanks to the generous support of the New Zealand public, The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ  is able to continue our sight- restoring work in the Pacific region.  We can help people like Isireli, who was blinded by cataracts for five years. Having his sight restored has enabled Isireli to regain his independence and his livelihood. He can return to work and provide for his family once more. But being able to see his wife and granddaughter again was perhaps the greatest gift of all.

In the Pacific region alone there are over 80,000 needlessly blind, 70% as a result of treatable cataracts. A further 240,000 people are severely visually impaired and simply need correctly prescribed glasses.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is currently working to address this problem and to provide a longterm solution to alleviating avoidable blindness. We are training local eye doctors in modern cataract surgery techniques and providing on going eye care training and support for Pacific doctors and nurses. We work with local governments and partners to implement sustainable and effective eye-care programs throughout the region.

With your support we will continue to fight blindness and improve eye-care services in the Pacific region. We will help restore sight to many thousands of people like Isireli.
