"When Fred was dying I promised that we'd make his dreams come true." Gabi Hollows

Gabi Hollows visited New Zealand for a whirlwind visit this week.  She was in Auckland to attend a screening of the film ‘Light of the Himalaya' at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre, organised by The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ for its supporters to mark The Foundation's 15th anniversary.

'Light of the Himalaya', an award winning adventure documentary by Serac Films, documents the challenges eye surgeons face restoring sight in remote Himalayan mountain communities.

Featured in the film is Dr Sanduk Ruit who, with Fred Hollows, was instrumental in introducing modern cataract surgery to Nepal and who has personally restored sight to over 70,000 people and trained local surgeons in China, India, Nepal, North Korea and Vietnam.

Gabi was thrilled to be able to introduce the film, as Dr Ruit and Fred shared a very special bond.  Their mutual belief that people living in developing countries should have access to affordable and quality eye care led to a determined and shared journey to take modern cataract surgery to all corners of Nepal and the world beyond.

The evening was made possible by the support of Zest Kitchen, Montana, Qantas, North Port Events, Finish Digital and Opticmix.
