Presently, PNG is extremely under-resourced in eye health professionals. Development of health infrastructure and service delivery in PNG is hindered by a lack of adequately trained nursing and medical staff.
In response to this need, The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is running a Postgraduate Diploma in Eye Care (PGDEC) for PNG nurses. The PGDEC is delivered at and run through Divine Word University, Madang. The PGDEC aims to develop the capacity and ability of nurses to provide eye care independently in PNG. The 9-month course begins in February and the curriculum is based on World Health Organisation recommendations, tailored to the eye care conditions more prevalent in PNG. It is based on the type of work the Pacific region's eye care personnel are required to perform, with the resources they have available, and on the circumstances and health systems to which they return.
The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is seeking optometrists and eye nurses to teach and supervise students on the 2009 PGDEC. Applicants should ideally have experience working in eye clinics in low resource settings, a strong interest in teaching and mentoring and be available for postings of 4 weeks - 4 months. Benefits include a daily consultancy rate (according to experience and qualifications), insurance, indemnity, travel and accommodation costs.
