World renowned eye surgeon and humanitarian Fred Hollows has been named a founding member of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School Business Alumni, which has been set up to recognise the pre-eminent contribution of former students to business, commerce and the community.

“It is the school’s belief that men who are inducted as PNBHS Business Alumni will act as role models for our current young men," says Tim O’Connor, Rector of Palmerston North Boys’ High School. "It is our hope that their actions and deeds will inspire our students.”

The announcement was made on Tuesday 7th February 2012 at a special event held at Palmerston North Boys' High School.

Gabi Hollows, Founding member of The Fred Hollows Foundation, attended the event and was delighted by the announcement.

"I know that if Fred were here today he would be extremely proud to be named a founding member of the Palmerston North Boys' High School Business Alumni. The Fred Hollows Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and it's wonderful that Fred and his sight-restoring work are being recognised in Palmerston North where he spent his formative years."

Other members of the Hollows family who attended the event included Monty Hollows, Carol Hollows, Jason Hollows and Laura van Peer.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is very grateful to Palmerston North Boys' High School for recognising Fred's life-changing work.

"Fred was a truly inspirational New Zealander who worked tirelessly to restore sight to cataract-blind people in developing countries," says Brent Impey, Executive Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. "We are absolutely delighted that he has been named as a founding member of the Business Alumni. We are also extremely grateful to Palmerston North Boys' High School for their recognition of Fred and their ongoing fundraising efforts to ensure his work continues."

Palmerston North Boys' High School has raised over $12,000 for The Foundation since 2005.
