Lecturers and supervisors

Lecturers and supervisors needed for short contracts

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is looking for therapeutically qualified optometrists and ophthalmic nurses to assist in the delivery of Foundation-supported training programs and post-graduate workplace support.

Ideally we would like to find candidates who have experience in teaching, and experience in working in a developing country.

There are a number of placements becoming available for 4-5 weeks at a time in Madang, Papua New Guinea, and Suva, Fiji.

While details and dates are not yet finalised, we are expecting to have to fill the need for:

  • Lecturers for refraction
  • Lecturers for essential eye care
  • Clinical supervisors for refraction, essential eye care, and ophthalmic operating theatre practice
  • Workforce support 'mentors' for graduates

Our training centre in Madang and the Pacific Eye Institute in Suva offer a year-long Postgraduate Diploma in Eye Care. Our students are mature-age, with nursing backgrounds, who come from all over PNG and the Pacific to gain specialist qualifications in eye nursing.

After their residential training year they return to their provinical and district hospitals and health centres to implement avoidable blindness initiatives in their communities. They then receive ongoing support through The Foundation's workforce support program.

Interested candidates should send their CV and covering letter indictating their area of interest to Louisa Semmons at lsemmons@hollows.org.nz.

What we can do

Help keep Fred’s dream alive.

4 out of 5 people who are blind in the developing world don't need to be. Routine treatment costing as little as $25 can restore sight and hope.
