The year to 30 June 2008 was a year of many achievements for The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ across our three main areas of activity – education, workforce support, and research and advocacy.
Some highlights:
- To our delight, NZAID’s independent evaluation of our Pacific Regional Program reported that The Foundation had “developed blindness prevention programs of inestimable value” to the region.
- Between 2002 and 2007 we trained 4 eye doctors and 39 eye nurses at three regional training centres (Suva, Madang and Dili). 2008 saw a further 3 doctors and 22 nurses attending our diploma courses.
- FHFNZ continues to support the eye health profession throughout the region. As a result of this support, achievements in the year to 30 June 2008 included:
- more than 700 sight-restoring surgical procedures were performed by staff, students and graduates of PEI
- more than 1800 people were screened in Madang, PNG, resulting in close to 500 operations, and
- some 6000 spectacles were dispensed in Timor-Leste.
