The Foundation and our achievements

Like Fred, we have a vision of a world where no one is needlessly blind.

Thank you for helping Fred's work live on. We really couldn't do it without you. Photo: Kristian FriresThe Fred Hollows Foundation carries on the work of a very special New Zealander, the late Professor Fred Hollows (1929-1993). Fred was an internationally acclaimed eye surgeon and social justice activist who championed the right of all people to high quality and affordable eye care.

The Fred Hollows Foundation was established in Sydney, Australia, on 3 September 1992, just five months before Professor Fred Hollows passed away.

We have a vision of a world where no one is needlessly blind. We work to restore sight and end avoidable blindness across Asia, Africa and the Pacific.

Our sight-restoring work is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

The Foundation has performed over two million sight-restoring operations and treatments. In many cases all it took was a short 20-minute operation costing as little as $25.

The Foundation in New Zealand

In 1993, The Fred Hollows Foundation opened an office in New Zealand. In the early days we raised money to support the intraocular lens laboratories in Eritrea and Nepal.  Since 2002 we have been restoring sight and training eye health workers in the Pacific Islands, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste where 4 out of 5 people who are blind don't have to be.

Amazing global achievements

Since The Foundation was established in 1992, we have:

  • Set up independent and commercially successful intraocular lens (IOL) laboratories in Nepal and Eritrea that have produced millions of sight-saving lenses. In doing so we reduced the cost of IOLs from over $200 to just $5, making cataract surgery affordable in some of the world’s poorest communities.
  • Pioneered modern techniques of cataract surgery in developing countries.
  • Implemented eye health programs in dozens of countries worldwide.

What we can do

Help keep Fred’s dream alive.

4 out of 5 people who are blind in the developing world don't need to be. Routine treatment costing as little as $25 can restore sight and hope.
