Adam's story | The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ

Adam's story

Produced by Topic Photography Ltd
Directed and edited by Mindy Yeh

In September 2011, photographer James Ensing-Trussell and videographer Mindy Yeh from Topic travelled with a team of Pacific eye health professionals from The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ.

24 year old Adam lives with his wife and young son on the island of Malekula in Vanuatu.

When we met Adam he was completely blind. His sight had deteriorated over many years until he could no longer work. The young family had no choice but to leave their community and move in with their relatives.

This proud young man lost not only the ability to provide for his family, but also his dignity and independence, relying on his wife to feed him and even take him to the toilet.

Thankfully, Adam met Basil, a Fred Hollows Foundation-trained eye nurse who was going door-to-door finding people in need of cataract surgery.

Basil assistaed Adam to get to the clinic to have his sight restored by The Foundation's visiting surgical outreach team.

Adam is no longer isolated in a work of darkness and is able to once again see his young son.

What we can do

Help keep Fred’s dream alive.

4 out of 5 people who are blind in the developing world don't need to be. Routine treatment costing as little as $25 can restore sight and hope.
