Palmerston North Boys' High School students celebrate 'Fred Hollows Day'

Students raise almost $2,000 to restore sight

The students of Palmerston North Boys' High School celebrated 'Fred Hollows Day' by donning cataract masks, to simulate sight loss, and carrying out activities such as a game of basketball and completing an obstacle course. The boys also hosted a BBQ lunch to fundraise for The Foundation.

Fred was an old boy of the school and remains a great source of pride there.

Foundation Executive Director Andrew Bell said it was important to thank the school for its efforts to fundraise and raise awareness.

"Part of the problem we have is passing on the knowledge of Fred to following generations, and we are grateful to Boys' High for continuing that."

The Foundation plans to further increase awareness of Fred in the city where he grew up by engaging Kiwi large-scale portrait artist Owen Dippie to create a commemorative mural on a prominent central city wall. The artwork is set to be completed during February next year —marking the 25th anniversary of Freds death.
