In 2007, in partnership with Divine Word University and Modilon General Hospital, we launched a comprehensive eye nurse training programme in Madang. We train qualified nurses to tackle refractive error and cataract blindness across the country.
That same year we refurbished the eye clinic at Modilon Hospital, which we have continued to manage since. The eye clinic provides a full-range of eye care services, including diabetic laser treatment, surgery and surgical outreaches.
The demand for eye care services in Madang has grown substantially since 2007, which led to The Foundation investing in an upgrade of the Modilon Eye Clinic in 2014. Treatment rooms were added to the clinic to expand eye services and a new operating theatre wing was built to allow a higher volume of patients to receive surgical eye care. The clinic also forms the base for nationwide surgical outreaches, which reach large sections of the population that otherwise have no access to eye care.
