Our vision and purpose

Our vision

Our vision is a world in which no person is needlessly blind or vision impaired.

Inspired by the legacy of our founder, international acclaimed eye surgeon and social justice activist, Professor Fred Hollows, this vision guides us in our work. Fred believed that everyone, no matter where they live, has a right to high-quality, affordable eye care.

Our purpose

  • We work to end avoidable blindness and vision impairment in the Pacific.
  • We advocate for the right of all people to high-quality and affordable eye care.
  • We strive for eye care to be locally-led and accessible to all.
  • In doing this, we continue Fred’s legacy.

Why eye health

  • 1.1 billion people live with vision loss. Without urgent action, this number is projected to double by 2050.
  • 9 out of 10 people who are blind or vision impaired don’t need to be.
  • Blindness and vision loss are mostly preventable or treatable with current, cost-effective solutions, yet millions remain needlessly affected.
  • Restoring sight transforms lives and communities. With improved vision, students can thrive in school, adults can work, and families can live free from avoidable blindness.
  • It also helps build stronger economies. Research by The Fred Hollows Foundation and Australia’s Victoria University has found that for every $1 USD invested in cataract surgery, an average of $20.50 USD is returned into the economy.
