Where we work

We work alongside governments, local health authorities and universities in the Pacific to progress national eye health priorities, deliver eye care, and support the training of eye doctors and nurses.

Federated States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia is a country spread across the western Pacific Ocean comprising around 607 islands. Micronesia is made up of 4 island states: Pohnpei, Kosrae, Chuuk and Yap.

Marshall Islands

The Republic of the Marshall Islands is made up of 29 coral atolls and is situated slightly west of the International Date Line.

Timor-Leste

We built Timor-Leste’s National Eye Centre with the generous support of The Fred Hollows Foundation Australia and the governments of New Zealand and Australia. The National Eye Centre has been owned and led by the local government since 2016.

Nauru

Population 12,017

Once known as Pleasant Island, the Republic of Nauru is a small island nation in Micronesia, a subregion of Oceania in the Central Pacific. Covering just 21 square kilometres (8.1 square miles), it is the smallest country in the South Pacific.

Tuvalu

Tuvalu is a Polynesian island country comprised of 3 reef islands and 6 true atolls.

Tokelau

Population 1,500

Tokelau is a dependent territory of New Zealand located in the southern Pacific Ocean. It comprises three tropical coral atolls—Atafu, Nukunonu, and Fakaofo—with a total land area of just 10 square kilometres (4 square miles).

Cook Islands

The Cook Islands is made up of 15 islands and is located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is surrounded by American Samoa and Niue to the west, Kiribati to the north, and French Polynesia to the east.

Niue

Niue is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, often referred to as "The Rock"—a name derived from its traditional title, the "Rock of Polynesia." It is one of the largest raised coral islands in the world.

Clinics

We support seven eye health facilities across the Pacific, each designed to provide quality eye care in their communities. They are designed to be climate-resilient, incorporating sustainable practices and structures that can withstand the region’s challenging weather conditions.

As well, these clinics do more than deliver eye care — they serve as crucial training centres that strengthen the local eye care workforce.

  • Working with our Pacific partners to determine the prevalence and causes of blindness and vision impairment in their countries.
  • Supporting the development of Pacific eye health workforces through workforce support and eye care training.
  • Increasing access to inclusive eye care services.
  • Delivering eye care in remote regions and communities.
  • Sharing essential eye health information to equip communities with the knowledge needed to protect and maintain their vision.
