Inspire the Freds of tomorrow with our Education Packs. These downloadable resources are based on the incredible life of Fred Hollows and the work of The Foundation.
Our downloadable Education Packs are a free resource to help you teach the next generation about social action, avoidable vision loss and the legacy of legendary Kiwi, Fred Hollows.
The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ’s Education Packs provide engaging learning opportunities for students across six year levels (Years 5–10). The resources have been tailor-made by Shayla Close, Head of Social Studies at Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and are guided by the refreshed, progression-focused NZ curriculum.
Each Education Pack contains lesson plans, PowerPoint modules and supporting resources. The lessons enable students to deepen their understanding of the big ideas (understand), as they explore the context (know) using critical practices (do). Teachers’ notes and lesson plan overviews are included, detailing module content and learning outcomes. Lessons can be taught online or via printouts.
The Education Pack is particularly suited to Social Sciences, with modules including:
The modules help students develop their critical and conceptual thinking skills, communicate arguments and ideas using social science conventions, collect and analyse information, and broaden their knowledge of what it means to take action.
If you have students who’d like to do even more, our fundraising page has great ideas to raise money for those who are needlessly blind or vision impaired in the Pacific.
There are three Education Packs: for Years 5 and 6; Years 7 and 8; and Years 9 and 10.
Get upper primary students started on their journey towards understanding social action and the work of Fred Hollows.
The resources for Years 7 and 8 build on the lessons, themes and ideas presented in the primary Education Pack.
Challenge your students to extend their source analysis and critical thinking skills as they learn more about avoidable blindness.
Standalone resources that can be used in the classroom.
The planning and connections to the curriculum have already been done, the lessons are made, and the resources are there – it is ready to pick up and go.
The resources are tailored for each of the phases of the new curriculum, with some of those phases being 3–4-week blocks of learning – but the way it’s been structured means you can dip in and pick the ones that best fit what you have time for.
The Education Pack is particularly well suited to Social Sciences, covering themes of local history, social action, and connection with the Pacific.
