We do even more than surgery, working with countries across the Pacific to improve eye health and strengthen local eye health care systems.
The Pacific Eye Institute continues to collaborate with Fiji National University to provide practical training for local eye health students.
In 2023, 1,530 consultations were provided, and 106 sight-saving surgeries were performed,
in Kiribati.
Our partnerships with University of Papua New Guinea and Divine Word University continue to enable the training of eye doctors and nurses in PNG.
We continue to support the Ministry of Health and Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital to deliver vital eye care services across Samoa.
In 2023 The Foundation continued working with Solomon Islands government and local partners to provide quality, inclusive clinical and outreach services across the country.
In 2023, a total of 23 outreaches made eye care services more accessible for remote Tongan communities.
Home to more than 11 million people, the Pacific is a region rich in cultural, social and ecological heritage.
However, its communities face many challenges.Sea levels are rising, and extreme weather events are common. In some areas, the soil can’t grow crops or feed farm animals. Many countries have small health budgets, limited infrastructure, and geography that isolates much of the population from easy access to healthcare services.
But there is one health challenge we can do something about: globally 9 out of 10 people who are blind don’t need to be. That’s why we work with our Pacific neighbours to help end avoidable blindness and vision impairment.
We know that ending avoidable blindness and vision impairment takes more than surgery alone. We work with our Pacific partners to help build and strengthen eye health systems, including training and growing local eye care workforces, supporting the delivery of quality and inclusive eye care services, and supporting the establishment of locally led eye care plans that support sustainable eye care programming.
