Each Pacific country faces its own unique challenges when it comes to eye care, from climate change impacts to limited eye health infrastructure.

Through partnerships with local organisations and Pacific governments, we’re making progress in treating avoidable blindness, strengthening eye health systems, and establishing quality, accessible eye care.

Current state of eye health in the Pacific

Countries in the Pacific have unacceptably high rates of blindness and vision impairment.

In the region, the leading conditions causing blindness and vision impairment are cataracts, refractive error and diabetes eye disease.  These issues are often preventable or treatable, yet limited access to quality eye care means many people are still affected.

Research supporting our work

The rewards of quality eye health care stretch far beyond the operating table.

When a person’s sight is restored, this not only benefits the individual, but also their family and community.

Broader communities also gain advantage from the economic impacts of better eye health. World-first research by The Fred Hollows Foundation and Australia’s Victoria University Institute of Strategic Economic Studies has shown that investments in eye health offer among the highest return on investment (ROI) of any disease intervention:

  • Every $1 USD spent on cataract surgery delivers an economic return of $20.50 USD.
  • When both cataract and refractive error are treated, every $1 USD spent delivers an economic return of $9.40 USD.
  • Every $1 USD spent treating myopia delivers an economic return of $10.80 USD.
