We’re delighted to welcome Professor Ifereimi Waqainabete to the Board of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. Professor Waqainabete is a Fijian surgeon and health systems leader with more than two decades’ experience across clinical practice, public policy and regional health advocacy.
Currently Professor of Surgery at the University of Fiji’s Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Sciences, he has previously served as Fiji’s Minister for Health and Medical Services, as a general surgeon and academic based in Suva, and in leadership roles with professional bodies across the Pacific. His work has spanned specialist surgery, health workforce development, non-communicable diseases and health system strengthening in Fiji and the wider region.
“What interests me most about The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is its unique role in eye care and its impact in the Pacific. People living with low vision often struggle to earn an income and support their families. By restoring sight and preventing avoidable blindness, The Foundation is improving both the quantity and quality of life for our people,” he says.
Professor Waqainabete has a long-standing commitment to equity in health and to ensuring communities have access to essential services, including eye care. His experience working alongside governments, universities, hospitals and regional partners will be invaluable as The Foundation continues to support Pacific-led solutions and build long-term, sustainable eye health systems.
“As a Board member, I hope to bring a strong Pacific voice and provide insight into the cultural nuances that shape how healthcare is delivered and received in our region. I see my role as advocating, both in New Zealand and across the Pacific, for the communities we serve. As someone whose surgical training included almost four years in New Zealand, I am grateful for how this country has helped to mould my career,” he says.
