Thanks for thinking of us, but unfortunately we no longer take donated glasses as it’s too costly.

Donated glasses are often a specific prescription with different strength lenses. This means the chance of finding a perfect (or even close) match for another wearer is slim to none. The cost to arrange custom lenses to then be created for bespoke frames is much higher than the cost of providing ready-made glasses.

The Lions Club would be very appreciative of your donation. They collect glasses for their Recycle For Sight programme which regrades and distributes 250,000 to 500,000 pairs each year to those in need throughout the world. For details on where to drop off or post your old glasses, visit the Lions Club Recycle for Sight website.

Alternatively, you can drop them into your local Specsavers store who will recycle them in partnership with the Recycle For Sight programme.

If you live in the Kerikeri area, the Kerikeri Woodchoppers sell and deliver firewood, with all of their proceeds going to The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. They also accept donations of firewood and trees.

If you donate online, you will receive your receipt by email shortly after your donation is processed.

For other donation methods we will post or email your receipt to you as long as we have your up to date contact information. Monthly donors will automatically be sent a receipt for their donations in April each year. If you plan to make several cash donations a year and would prefer an annual receipt, instead of individual receipts each time, please get in touch.

If you do not receive a receipt or need a replacement please email info@hollows.nz or call 0800 227 229 to speak to our supporter services team.

For every $1 donated, 75c goes directly towards eye health programmes and public education and 25c is necessary for administration, communication and fundraising costs which allows us to help even more people.

Your donation could be used to restore someone’s sight, but it may also go towards a range of other programme activities like training eye doctors and nurses. You can find learning resources based on the work of Fred Hollows and The Foundation on our education page.

The planning and connections to the curriculum have already been done, the lessons are made, and the resources are there – it is ready to pick up and go.

The resources are tailored for each of the phases of the new curriculum, with some of those phases being 3–4-week blocks of learning – but the way it’s been structured means you can dip in and pick the ones that best fit what you have time for.

The Education Pack is particularly well suited to Social Sciences, covering themes of local history, social action, and connection with the Pacific.

We would love to hear your feedback on our education resources, please reach out to Meghan Swart, Media & Communications Specialist, on mswart@hollows.nz

Towards ending avoidable blindness and vision impairment in the Pacific. You can use our impact calculator to see what each amount of money can contribute towards. For example, $25 will help to pay for one cataract surgery, and $10 can provide up to three pairs of glasses.

Absolutely, we can give talks throughout NZ, and we’re happy to present online as well.

The cost of restoring sight differs from country to country due to a number of varying factors. In some countries, we can restore sight for as little as $25.

This $25 covers the cost of the vital components of cataract surgery including the intraocular lens (IOL) and other consumables such as bandages, local anaesthetic and medications. This $25 does not incorporate the costs of the clinics, equipment or medical training of the doctors and nurses.

Medical treatment in countries like New Zealand is more expensive because it uses different techniques with more advanced and costly equipment. Therefore it’s impossible to compare with other countries whose medical systems are less developed or have limited health budgets. In the Pacific, a manual and more cost-effective technique is used that doesn’t require the expensive technology but achieves the same result.

Another way of looking at it is that in some of the countries where we work, people may be living on only a few dollars a day. The $25 it costs for an operation as a percentage of their yearly income can be quite similar to the approximately $5,000 it costs in New Zealand, where the average yearly income is around $65,000.

We work across the Pacific region, in countries including Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea.

We also provide support to Nauru and Tuvalu, and have worked with the health authorities in the Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Marshall Islands, Niue, Timor-Leste, and Tokelau to train 44 eye care clinicians.

Fred Hollows was a kiwi eye surgeon who dedicated his life to restoring sight to people in under-served communities. His legacy lives on through the work of The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, which continues his mission of preventing avoidable blindness and ensuring that everyone has access to the eye care they need, regardless of their location or circumstances.

We appreciate your request to visit our programmes in the Pacific, but unfortunately we can’t allow visitors in our clinics. This is to avoid disruption to our eye care services and to provide privacy and respect to the patients accessing eye care.

Globally, 9 out of 10 people who are blind or visually impaired don’t need to be, their condition is preventable or treatable. Our focus is in the Pacific where there are chronic shortages of eye doctors and nurses who are able to treat people with avoidable blindness or vision impairment. The impact of these shortages can be seen in countries like Papua New Guinea, where an estimated 5.6% of adults aged over 50 are blind, compared to New Zealand where it is estimated 0.53% of adults over 50 are blind.

In New Zealand we have a public health system that provides a full range of eye care services. If you require treatment, we strongly suggest getting in touch with your general health practitioner or primary healthcare provider.

As of April 2023, we have 37 people in New Zealand and 71 throughout the Pacific.

If you live in one of the Pacific Island countries where we work, we should be able to help. See our individual country pages for more information.

Unfortunately, if you live outside of these countries, we can’t provide individual medical advice. We’re an international development organisation that works with local partners in the Pacific to strengthen local eye health systems. This means we don’t have any medical staff or medical facilities outside the Pacific.

Please get in touch with your general health practitioner and they’ll be able to help you.

Monthly giving is the most effective way to help eliminate avoidable blindness and vision impairment.
Monthly gifts are our most reliable source of funding. Knowing we have a certain amount of funds each month means we can focus more on delivering impact alongside our Pacific partners, and continuing Fred’s legacy.

Monthly givers ensure that the next person in line for surgery has the support they need to have their sight restored.

A monthly gift from you helps build a vital network of Pacific eye doctors and nurses and means they are supported when they return to their local communities. Your monthly gift helps create a sustainable solution; just as everyday Kiwis carefully plan how much they’re able to give monthly, we strategically sort out how every cent can make long-term impact and transformational change for people in the Pacific.

Monthly gifts are directed to where the need is greatest each month. By helping us continue our work, your generous support each month will restore sight to a person who is going blind when they don’t need to be. This was Fred’s vision.

Fred also believed in enabling people to provide quality eye care in their own communities, so training local Pacific eye care professionals, from community health workers to eye doctors and nurses, is an important part of our long-term vision. Your monthly gift helps build this vital network of local eye care professionals, and ensures sustainable and lasting change for generations to come.

Monthly giving provides a steady and reliable income stream, allowing The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ to plan and execute long-term eye care services and sight-restoring surgeries across the Pacific. These contributions are vital in preventing avoidable blindness and vision impairment, ensuring sustainable eye health services, and training local doctors and nurses to continue this life-changing work. Monthly gifts are the most reliable source of income – they mean we can worry less about raising funds and focus more on delivering the job we owe to Fred’s legacy.

Monthly gifts are used where the need is greatest at the time, primarily to fund sight-restoring surgeries, provide treatment for preventable blindness, and train local eye care professionals. These donations also help us expand our outreach to remote and underserved areas in the Pacific, ensuring that everyone, regardless of location, has access to essential eye care services.

We employ a variety of fundraising strategies to engage new supporters and retain existing supporters. These include telemarketing, SMS campaigns, digital advertising, social media outreach, email campaigns, and face-to-face fundraising. Our approach allows us to reach supporters across multiple platforms and provide them with meaningful opportunities to contribute to our sight-saving work.

Monthly supporters play a critical role in helping The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ restore sight and prevent blindness. Their consistent contributions allow us to plan ahead and support the needs of those living with avoidable blindness and vision impairment, perform thousands of surgeries each year, and train local eye healthcare professionals who continue the work of restoring sight for years to come. Monthly gifts are the most reliable source of income – they mean we can worry less about raising funds and focus more on delivering the job we owe to Fred’s legacy.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ accepts Monthly donations via a payment card or direct debit. You can nominate a monthly debit date of 1st, 10th or 15th if using your card. For direct debit you can chose 5th or 20th of each month.

Annual receipts for monthly donations are issued after the end of the tax year, typically six – eight weeks after the tax year closes for the previous financial year. If you make a one-off donation, a receipt will be issued at the time of the gift.

Each year, The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ works with Pacific partners to perform thousands of sight-restoring surgeries and deliver eye care services to people throughout the Pacific. We also support the training of local eye health specialists to provide eye care services in their own communities and work to strengthen local health systems so that everyone can access quality eye care.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ works with local Pacific partners to support a wide range of services, including:

  • Sight-restoring surgeries, particularly for cataracts and other preventable conditions.
  • Training programmes for local eye doctors and nurses to build sustainable eye care services.
  • Eye screening and treatment programmes for communities across the Pacific.
  • Research and innovation in the field of eye health to improve treatment outcomes and expand services to more communities.

The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ is committed to transparency and ensuring that every dollar donated is used effectively. We regularly publish reports on our impact and financial performance, showing exactly how donations are used to restore sight and prevent blindness. These reports are available on our website for all supporters to access.

If you have any further questions or need assistance, you can reach The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ from Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. You can contact us by calling 0800 227 229, or via email at givemonthly@hollows.nz

Who you are helping

Your support will help give a lifetime of sight to someone every month.

Right now, 9 out of 10 people who are blind don’t need to be. Sight loss and vision impairment can affect anyone, including children. One billion people are living with vision loss – most of which is treatable and preventable.

Fred’s Partners are a community of people who support us with a monthly donation. They step in to help us turn these statistics on their head. Just like Fred, they understand the problem, so they roll up their sleeves and help us get the job done through their Monthly Gift.

Cataract is one of the leading causes of vision impairment and blindness. Thankfully, cataracts can be removed through a relatively short 20-minute operation recognised as one of the most cost-effective healthcare interventions.

When you join as a Fred’s Partner with a Monthly Gift, you will help someone in the Pacific living with avoidable blindness. Your impact goes beyond the operating table, by supporting Pacific teams with the funds they need to get people treated, and putting the foundations in place to train local eye doctors and nurse who can go on to restore sight every month in their own communities

It takes just one person to make an impact that will create a whole lifetime of sight – you can be that person today.
